Doctoral student position for Pharmacology/ Biomedicine, 4-year Emerging theme position 2018-2022 in Research Unit of Biomedicine/ Faculty of Medicine and Biocenter Oulu, University of Oulu

University of Oulu has allocated 4-year doctoral training positions to emerging research themes in association with the four focus institutes Biocenter Oulu, Eudaimonia, Infotech and Kvantum. This new programme will facilitate linking of the best practices and best science to a larger part of the university’s research and aims to support starting group leaders to develop internationally top-level research.

Applications are invited for a full-time doctoral student position for a maximum of four years, starting at the earliest on 01.09.2018 in a research project of Dr. Johanna Magga in the Research unit of Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with Prof. Lauri Eklund in the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and Biocenter Oulu, and with Prof. Risto Kerkelä in the Research unit of Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine. The applied position is under the new Emerging projects programme within the context of Biocenter Oulu (, which offers a high-level international multidisciplinary environment supplied with cutting-edge infrastructures in the strategic focus area “Molecular and Environmental basis for lifelong health”.

Our research aims to determine the role of TGF-beta family of growth factors in endothelial dysfunction, abnormal extracellular matrix production and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy in development of cardiovascular diseases. To successfully occupy the position of a doctoral student, the candidate must possess a Master’s degree or an equivalent degree (e.g. licentiate) preferably in biochemistry, biology, medicine, pharmacy, physiology or equivalent. We hope applicant to have previous experience within biomedical research in cell and molecular biology and/or in vivo methods. We also hope the applicant to be familiar with basis of pharmacology and toxicology. We expect the applicant to be active and able to pursue independent research. Degree must have been completed with good grades (at least 60% of maximum grade, or 3/5, in both taught studies and the Master’s thesis) by 31.08.2018 (or latest before the job contract starts). Excellent writing and fluency in English is expected. The doctoral student position is intended for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) who, according to the ”European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers”, is defined as a researcher in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research activity, including the period of research training. Applicants will be either starting their doctoral training, or will have completed no more than two full years of training (adjusted for possible previous part-time status) at the time the position is filled. The selected candidate will carry out his/her doctoral studies in the Health and Biosciences Doctoral Programme of the University of Oulu Graduate School (or one of the other UniOGS Doctoral Programmes, if appropriate) and must meet the minimal requirements to receive doctoral study rights as defined in


The salary of the selected doctoral student will be set on levels 2 – 4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance (max. 46.3%). The total salary for these levels (before tax) currently ranges from about 2005 to max. 3657 Euros/month for full-time employment, depending on qualifications, performance and progress of the doctoral studies.
