Professorship in Biorefinery measurement

The Faculty of Technology at the University of Oulu, Oulu, and the Kajaani University Consortium (KUC), Kajaani, in Finland invite applications for a full professorship position in Biorefinery measurement. This is a five-year post that strengthens the focus area ‘Creating Sustainability through Materials and Systems’ of the University of Oulu. The professorship will be mainly located in Kajaani and it will be a part of the Faculty of Technology and Control Engineering Research unit at the University of Oulu. The work will take place both in Kajaani and Oulu campuses. A research group of 3 – 4 researchers will support the professor. The group will be running inside its own budget frame.

KUC is a networked academic community focusing on scientific research, university teaching and community relations. The objective is to intensify cooperation between the universities and to develop collaboration with regional universities of applied sciences, business and commerce. KUC consists of four networked universities (Eastern Finland, Lapland, Jyväskylä and Oulu) that have units in Kajaani and Sotkamo. The Consortium is coordinated by the University of Oulu. KUC is one of the areal units of the University of Oulu.

The Unit of Measurement Technology (MITY), is a sub-unit of KUC. The aim of the unit is to carry out research and technology development and provide R&D-services in the selected fields of measurement technologies. MITY consists of two research groups: Cleantech and Health & Wellbeing and has some 40 professionals with multi-disciplinary scientific background and expertise. The aim of the Cleantech group is to develop novel applications of measurement technologies for real-time environmental monitoring, mining industry, forest industry and bioeconomy. The mission of the Health & Wellbeing group is to develop online biosensors for applications of human physiology and to develop analytical services for the food sector, analyzing of plant ingredients, their bioactivities and processing of plant and bio-based materials.

The Control Engineering Research Unit has a long experience on modelling, simulation, optimization and control of industrial processes in wood-based industry, mining and metallurgy. Recent work has been directed also to energy and environment, and management and control needs in infrastructures, e.g. automation in buildings. The group consists of eight postdocs (Doctors in Technology) and doctoral students.

Job Responsibilities, Required Qualifications

The field of the Professorship is focused on on-line measurements in production processes of bio-based industries, especially in areas related to biochemistry of wood and wood-based materials. In order to be successful in the job, the professor should understand different areas of ecosystems in bioeconomy and their connections to production and measurement technologies. The main areas are:

- to understand the analysis and measurement needs in biorefinery production, its side streams and side products and possibilities to analyse and interpret these measurements;
- to understand the importance of optimizing/optimal control of these production lines also from the biochemical viewpoint and the role of measurement technologies;
- to master the measurement needs coming from authorities, e.g. environmental permits, safety issues;
- to design and develop the future replacement of existing off-line and laboratory technologies with on-line measurements; e.g. bacterial measurements; and
- to master building and maintaining of test environments.

Under the section 33 of the Universities Act, the required qualifications for the professor position include a doctoral degree, high quality scientific or artistic competence, experience in supervising scientific research, ability to give high quality education based on research and to supervise theses, as well as evidence for international collaboration in his/her field of research. In this case, the professor should also show necessary practical experience on the above-mentioned areas.

When assessing the candidate’s merits, issues taken into consideration include peer-reviewed scientific publications and other research results with scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the skill to create teaching material, other teaching merits, the demonstration lecture, and the doctoral theses the candidate has supervised. In addition to this, the following merits will be taken into consideration: the candidate’s activity in the scientific community; practical familiarity with the field in question; success in acquiring supplementary funding; scientific work abroad and international activities. A particular emphasis is also paid to the requested research and action plan.

The salary will be based on levels 8 – 10 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance (maximum of 46.3 % of the job-specific component). The salary thus being roughly 5,400 – 8,400 euros per month depending on employee’s qualifications. The employee is entitled to annual incentive bonuses paid on the basis of approved reward systems and profit center specific awarding criteria at the University of Oulu. Additionally, the employee is entitled to health care benefits.

Applications, including the attachments in English, should be submitted by 3.6.2018, using the electronic application form. All material, including publications, should be submitted electronically.

The position is filled as of 1.9.2018 or by agreement. A trial period of six (6) months is applied in the position.

The following documents must be attached to the application for expert assessment purposes:

  1. a brief curriculum vitae written in accordance with the guidelines of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity (http://www.tenk.fi/en/content/template-researchers-curriculum-vitae)
  2. a list of publications (15 most important ones marked) compiled in accordance with the guidelines of the Academy of Finland (http://www.aka.fi/en/funding/how-to-apply/appendices-required/guidelines-for-list-of-publications/)
  3. teaching merits of relevance to the post presented in the form of a teaching portfolio or a comparable document; in the portfolio (or other document), the table of contents shown belowshould be followed
  4. a research and action plan (max. 6 pages), that includes an account of applicant’s past and current research and a plan on how he/she wants to develop the research on the area of biorefinery measurements
  5. at most fifteen (15) publications and other works on the above mentioned area as a zipped file and indicated in accordance with the list of publications, to be taken into consideration upon assessment of the applicant's eligibility and merits.

Before being officially accepted for the position, the successful candidate must present his/her original degree diplomas or certified copies thereof, as well as a signed curriculum vitae, to the faculty.

Referee Assessment

The Research Council of the University of Oulu will select a minimum of two reviewers to be consulted regarding the selection process. When selecting the reviewers, the specialization of the candidates in his/her field is taken into consideration, and general fairness is observed otherwise as well.

The applicant will be informed of the referee candidates and shall be given an opportunity to express any objections regarding possible conflicts of interest or scientific doctrines represented by the candidates. Objections to individual referees shall be upheld or rejected in accordance with the Administrative Procedure Act. The applicant shall be notified of the referees' statements as soon as they have been received.

Official Employment

The Dean will make her proposition on the basis of the proposition the recruitment committee and submit this, justifications and attachments included, to the Vice-Rector, who will make the decision concerning the employment of the candidate.

TEACHING PORTFOLIO: TABLE OF CONTENTS

In agreement with the procedures accepted at the University of Oulu, teaching skills mentioned in the Appointments Statute (770/2009) will be evaluated according to the outline below:

  1. Teaching philosophy, teaching strategies and methods
    - teacher’s self-reflection on his/her teaching style, a personal background idea of teaching; how are these reflected in teaching work? A description of oneself as a teacher and an implementer of educational work.
  2. Practical experience in teaching and efforts to improve teaching
  3. A description of educational material (curricula, handouts, assignments, workbooks)
  4. Professional development as a teacher
  5. Evaluation from teaching (student evaluations, peer evaluations, awards and assessed test lectures)
  6. Future teaching goals and plans
    - teacher’s plans for future directions in his/her teaching development, for example in relation to the teaching curriculum of the degree programme
