Doctoral student in the project “iTask: Linguistic and embodied features of interactional multitasking” (the position is funded by the Eudaimonia Institute)

The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Oulu announces an opening for a Doctoral Student in English Philology. The position is located in the research project iTask: Linguistic and embodied features of interactional multitasking (http://www.oulu.fi/englishphilology/node/13399). In addition to this, the successful applicant will work as a member in the broader COACT research community (http://www.oulu.fi/coact/) and the English philology unit (http://www.oulu.fi/englishphilology/).

Subject field and description

The project uses video-based and conversation analytic methods to study interactional multitasking. It analyses how people talk and interact in real-time to make multitasking possible and how talk and interaction adapt to the demands to progress more than one activity at a time. The project studies multitasking in various settings, such as families, research laboratories, coordination centres, cafés and cars. The languages used in these settings are English, Finnish, French and Estonian. The project focuses on talk and multimodal features of interaction to identify and analyse interactional practices and social actions that people rely on to manage situations where they are multitasking.

Duties, eligibility and evaluation criteria

The hired doctoral student will be responsible for conducting research and completing a doctoral degree in the project’s area. The researcher can also take part in teaching and supervision (max. 5% of working time).

Candidates must have completed their Master’s degree (MA) in a relevant field (e.g. linguistics, sociology or education) by the time of appointment. Experience and knowledge in conversation analytic and/or interaction analytic methods (e.g. in form of a thesis or undertaken courses) and familiarity with the use of video-based methods are considered advantages. Experience in working in international environments is considered a merit. Excellent command of written and spoken English is required.

Salary

The salary will be based on the levels 2–4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 46.3 % of the job-specific component).
