|Postdoctoral Researcher, Digitally Fabricated Interaction Devices for VR-based Rehabilitation|

A postdoctoral researcher position with three-year appointment is available in the confluence of digital fabrication and virtual reality in the Design Research in Digital Fabrication research group of Associate Professor Georgi V. Georgiev at the Center for Ubiquitous Computing, Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The research will be conducted in collaboration with Professor Steven M. LaValle from the Perception Engineering research group. The position is partly funded by an EU Horizon 2020 project focused on the design and application of bespoke virtual reality controllers employed in virtual reality environments for disability rehabilitation. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to collaborative research efforts to explore the hardware and software aspects of controllers for virtual reality through the use of digital fabrication techniques and technology. Targeted applications of interest include virtual reality hardware (controllers and HMDs) and environments, additive manufacturing, haptic devices, gaming, intuitive interfaces, and the rehabilitation and promotion of well-being through virtual reality technology.
The earliest possible starting date is October 1, 2019, but the position will remain open until filled. A six-month trial period will be effective at the beginning of the three-year contract.
Required qualifications and assessment
The successful applicant must hold a PhD degree in computer science, electrical engineering, additive manufacturing, or a related field. Candidates, whose PhD thesis has been submitted for review by July 31, 2019, are eligible to apply. In addition to core background in digital fabrication and/or virtual reality, experience in the following areas will be considered favorably: assistive technology devices, virtual prototyping, 3D scanning and modelling in biomedical context, material science, product development, HCI, and design engineering.
Fluency in both written and spoken English is required, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills. Demonstrated experience in writing scientific publications, acquiring research funding, and teaching are considered merits. When assessing the qualifications, aspects to be considered include expertise on the research field and methodology, scientific publications, supervision experience, and activity in the scientific community.
Salary and benefits
The salary will be based on demand level 5-6 of the salary chart of teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). In practice, the salary will be roughly 3500 – 4500 € / month, depending on qualifications, performance, and experience. The employed person will be insured by the university and provided occupational healthcare. Finland is known as a country with a high quality of life and good healthcare system.
