Director, Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory

The University of Oulu is an international science university creating new knowledge, well-being and innovation for the future through multidisciplinary research and education. Close cooperation with research institutes, companies and the public sector has created an internationally significant research and innovation hub that has changed the world.

We are now inviting applications for

at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO). SGO is located 120 km north of the Arctic Circle in Finland, and it is an independent institute of the University of Oulu. Our national mission is to perform geophysical measurements, develop measuring methods, and conduct both empirical and theoretical research related to the field. The observatory is made up of an observation unit, a research and development unit and a technical unit whose operations support both of the above-mentioned units.

The Observatory’s operations cover a wide range of measurements of magnetic field, ionosphere, northern lights, cosmic radiation and seismic activity in 29 locations in the Arctic Ocean area through Fennoscandia, northern Finland and Africa to Antarctica. The Observatory develops measurement methods, theories and models related to the field, as well as conducts scientific research. Research at the Observatory is one of the spearheads of the research strategy chosen by the University of Oulu, “Earth and Near-Space Research and Environmental Change”.

SGO conducts research in the fields of ionospheric physics, inversion research, magnetosphere research, seismic research and galactic cosmic radiation. SGO researchers work together with researchers from around 200 different institutes. In Finland, the most important partners are the Arctic Space Centre, the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the University of Oulu´s research units for ionospheric physics and space climate and the Oulu Mining School.

The SGO Director will be responsible for the operational management and development of the unit's operations and for promoting national and international research collaboration. In addition, the Director must participate in the acquisition of competitive research funding. She/he is required to have a PhD degree, research scores in the field of research related to SGO's activities, and administrative experience. The place of employment is located in the unit's main office in Sodankylä but close ties are expected with the University’s main campus in Oulu. After selection, a person of special merit may be appointed to the position of Professor. We expect the Director to have a clear vision for developing the unit’s operations, ability to implement plans, and good leadership skills.

The salary of the position is based on the salary system of Finnish universities. The position of the Director is set at salary scale level 13 of the other staff. In addition, a personal work performance salary component is paid (maximum 50 % of the requirement level-based part of the salary). The type of employment contract is valid until further notice and is subject to a six-month trial period. A security clearance may be performed on the selected person.

We expect the Director to start in this position on September 1, 2019 or at a later time point subject to negotiations. Applications with attachments must be submitted through the electronic application system by July 31, 2019 (23:59 Finnish local time).
