Senior Lecturer in sustainability of the use of natural resources and conservation biology

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of Senior Lecturer in sustainability of the use of natural resources and conservation biology starting 1.1.2018 or as soon as possible thereafter, contract length maximum of five years.

Research of the Department of Biological and Environmental Science is renowned in the University’s denoted core research activity fields of basic natural phenomena and mathematical thinking. Areas of research strength in the Department include research of natural resources and environment, evolutionary research and biological nanoscience. The wide-ranging research area of natural resources and environment focuses on human impacts on the environment and the sustainability of the use of natural resources, and aims to provide tools for reducing harmful impacts of human activities on nature. This area integrates terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem research as well as conservation and management of natural resources.

The tasks of the senior lecturer are focussed on the sustainability of the use of natural resources and on conservation biology. Senior lecturer is teaching and conducting research on these fields but he/she is also expected to engage into societal debate and proactively influence the society and decision making. In addition, the duties include coordination and administration tasks related to establishing a transdisciplinary network around the themes of this call.

Teaching duties include lecturing on conservation and conservation biology, sustainability of the use of natural resources, sustainable development as well as courses on e.g. scientific writing and societal advocacy. Continuous development of teaching and administrative tasks related to teaching and other academic activities are every day routine of a senior lecturer. Senior lecturer is supervising candidate and masters theses and he/she is participating in supervision of PhD students and young post-docs.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of Senior Lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English language and an ability to teach in English are regarded as an advantage for the applicant.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct internationally high quality research that strengthens the research profile of the department on the fields of sustainability of the use of natural resources and conservation biology. The candidate has good record of research and publication, networking internationally, obtain research funding and teaching. Experience on organizing scientific and other events and meetings as well as a proven record of active professional engagement to societal discussions and decision making is a merit for the candidate. We count as a merit also experience on empirical evaluation of biological diversity and ecological condition of habitats and ecosystems, spatial multi-objective land use planning and prioritization as well as experience on transdisciplinary work.

The job-specific salary component of a Senior Lecturer is based on the job demands level 5-7 (EUR 2 865,30 – 3 851,33/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46.3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.

A trial period of four months will be used when the position is first filled.
