Postdoctoral Researcher, Applied Language Studies

Postdoctoral Researcher, Applied Language Studies, for the period from 1 January 2018 until 31 December 2018.

The fix-term position of a postdoctoral researcher is placed in the Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS). The Centre for Applied Language Studies, in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä, is a national expert unit specializing in studying the goals, practices and policies of language education.

AllRead project (The digital environment, GraphoLearn, for supporting reading skill development) is concerned with supporting reading development in a digital game environment.  AllRead project evaluates the efficiency of the science-based technological solution, GraphoLearn, for supporting reading skill acquisition in Finnish and German as the first language and in English as a foreign language. The efficacy of the learning game will be investigated for six to ten-year-old children in general but specifically for those with learning disabilities.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to focus on scientific research but the task may also include teaching within his/her own area of expertise.

AllRead project is looking for an expert on teaching and learning English as a foreign language.  The GraphoLearn team has developed an English game version for native language learners.  In AllRead-project, the task of the post doctoral researcher is to develop appropriate content for foreign language learners at the early stages of learning (e.g., 2nd and 3rd graders). The task includes for example development of content for training and assessing reading and writing skills as such as well as assessing and training reading related skills such as receptive vocabulary.

The duties and qualification requirements and language skills for the position of the postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by  the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. According to Finnish law, a non-native university teaching and research staff member can be granted an exemption from the requirement of Finnish language proficiency. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to have good skills in English language.

The job-specific salary component of a postdoctoral researcher is based on the job demands level 5-6 (2865,30 €/Month - 3340,77 €/Month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.

A trial period of four months will be used when the position is first filled.
