Postdoctoral Researcher in Philosophy

Department is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of

Postdoctoral Researcher in Philosophy, starting 1 February 2018 until 31 August 2021 or according to agreement.

The position is allocated to the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy. It houses the disciplines of Sociology, Social and public policy, Gender studies, Social work, Political science, and Philosophy. In addition to this, Master’s degrees are also completed in the programmes in Development and International Cooperation, Expertise in Civic Society, and Cultural Policy.

The focus areas of research in the department of Social Sciences and Philosophy are
organised into three research clusters:

  1. Political institutions, participation and conceptual change
  2. Sustainability and social transformations
  3. Transforming welfare policies and practices

The Postdoctoral Researcher’s position is allocated to the ERC Consolidator Grant research project Epistemic Transitions in Islamic Philosophy, Theology and Science (ETI) directed by Dr. Jari Kaukua.

The focus of the Postdoctoral Researcher’s duties is on conducting research related to questions of epistemology and theory of science in the history of post-classical Islamic philosophy, theology (kalām), and/or science. The Postdoctoral Researcher will also participate in the joint activities of the research group (seminars, workshops, meetings, editorial work). Historians of philosophy, theology and science (broadly conceived, including the occult sciences) are encouraged to apply.

The duties and qualification requirements and language skills for the position of the Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by  the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The language of operation in the project  is English, and the postholder is expected to be proficient in both spoken and written English. Successful conduction of the research task requires good skills in classical Arabic. Knowledge of Persian and/or Ottoman Turkish is regarded as an asset. According to the Finnish law a non-native university teaching and staff member can be granted an exemption from the requirement of Finnish language proficiency. Non-Finnish personnel are expected to acquire at least intermediate skills of Finnish within three years from the start of their employment.

The following aspects are taken into account when assessing an applicant’s merits: suitability of the research proposal, prior research experience, references.

The Postdoctoral Researcher’s job-specific salary component is based on the job demands level 5-6 (2 865,30 €/month - 3 340,77 €/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3 % of the job-spesific salary component is also paid.

 A trial period of four months will be used when the position is first filled.
