The University Language Centre is seeking to recruit staff for two positions of University Teacher in English, as of 1 August 2018 until further notice.
The University of Jyväskylä Language Centre is a multicultural expert unit for academic language learning and teaching. Its staff consists of 40 full-time employees and 40 part-time teachers. Our primary task is to organise communication and language studies for all bachelor’s and master’s degree students at the University of Jyväskylä, in compliance with the Government Decree on University Degrees. We provide nearly 700 courses in 18 languages every year. In addition, we organise academic writing and communication courses for doctoral students, communication and language training for the University’s staff, and support the University’s publication activities by providing translation and editing services.
In the position of university teacher, the emphasis is on teaching English oral and written academic communication for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students in the various faculties of the University, as well as for the staff. The position also includes continuous development of English instruction and related learning materials. Common development work at the Language Centre and administrative tasks related to teaching are also part of the work, even though the focus is on teaching.
The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of university teacher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. University teaching and research staff are expected to speak Finnish. When considered appropriate, the University may grant an exemption from the language proficiency requirements. The applicant must have native-level language skills in English.
Successful performance in the position requires multifaceted, multicultural knowledge of working life, familiarity with interdisciplinary conventions and current research on adult language learning and teaching, and proven experience of pedagogical development and research-based teaching.
The applicant is expected to have extensive academic teaching experience and special expertise in some of the following areas: language skills assessment, CLIL or multicultural and multidisciplinary student groups. Experience of teaching within various disciplines is regarded as an advantage. In addition, the ability to utilise ICT in teaching and student guidance as well as experience of team teaching and flexible modes of learning are emphasised in the selection. Further assets in the position include good interaction skills and the ability to create networks and cooperate with other language centre teachers and the staff of different departments.
The university teacher’s job-specific salary component is based on the job demands level 4–5 (€2475.31–2865.30/month) in the salary system for teaching and research staff at Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance is paid, corresponding to a maximum of 46.3% of the job-specific salary component. The position will begin with a trial period of four months.
