Senior Lecturer, Cell and Molecular Biology

Our naturally beautiful campus in the Jyväskylä city centre is home to a dynamic multidisciplinary research university – a modern, open and collaborative community of 2,500 experts and 15,000 students seeking answers to the pivotal questions of today and tomorrow. It was here, in 1863, that Finnish-language teacher education began. Since then, the University of Jyväskylä has been serving the future. The dialogue between research, education and society is our driving force. We cherish this balance of research and education, and work to promote open thinking. We kindle the skills, knowledge and passion to live wisely for the best of humanity.

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit an

Senior Lecturer in cell and molecular biology, starting January 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Research of the Department of Biological and Environmental Science belongs to the University’s denoted core research activity field of basic natural phenomena and mathematical thinking. The research in the Department focuses on three main areas: evolutionary biology, natural resources and environment, and biological nanoscience. In biological nanoscience, biological processes are investigated at the molecular level and the information gathered from these investigations is utilized widely in the fields of natural sciences. The Department offers state of the art biosafety level 2 cell culturing facilities connected directly to the advanced imaging technologies, as well as the facilities in molecular biology and molecular genetics. The Department is directly connected with the research infrastructure at the Nanoscience center of the University of Jyväskylä housing various microscopes, spectroscopy facilities, as well as nanoprocessing tools and clean room facilities. The Konnevesi research station, experimental ecology laboratories and modern greenhouses give cutting-edge facilities for wider use of experimental research from the molecular level to organism level.

The expertise and research interests of the senior lecturer are expected to match research areas of interest within the Department of Biological and Environmental Science and support the interdisciplinary molecular nanoscience profiling field of the University of Jyväskylä. One of the focus areas of the nanoscience profiling activities for years 2018-2022 is the cellular, molecular, genetic and evolutionary analysis of host-pathogen interactions. Candidates should promote this research area and strengthen the education in the field of the cell and molecular biology, especially virology and/or bacteriology. The senior lecturer is expected to establish vigorous, extramurally funded research programs and enthusiastically participate in the undergraduate and graduate teaching in virology, bacteriology and molecular biology. In addition, the senior lecturer is expected to participate in societal interactions in the discipline. The competitive applicant has a demonstrated record of teaching and gaining external research funding from peer-reviewed national and international funding agencies.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of senior lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English language and an ability to teach in English are regarded as advantageous for the applicant.
