Senior Researcher, musicology, as of 1 August 2018, in effect until further notice

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is a strong contributor to human sciences. It has a central role in understanding and developing human activities and the structures of society. The faculty is a unique, strongly profiled unit that conducts internationally significant research with societal impact. Research and education at the faculty focus on culture, arts, traditions, languages and communication, social sciences and philosophy.

The Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies (see Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies) is a leading unit in education and research in its core fields. Research in the department addresses current development trends, such as digitalization and technologization, multiculturalization, social polarization and rootlessness, from the perspectives of culture, art and music. More specifically, research focuses on wellbeing, identity, cognition, experiences, emotions, affects and signification processes, employing the methods of music and art research and critical cultural studies in a multidisciplinary way. Musicology focuses, in particular, on psycholocigal and cognitive music research, where music is studied from the view of individual experience and activity; for example, through emotions, perception, one’s body or interaction. The research conducted in the discipline emphasises the development of research methods. Research and its new openings are done in close cooperation with Music Therapy and Music Education. Furthermore, contacts with other subjects of the department as well as the Finnish Music Campus are accentuated (http://www.musiikkikampus.fi/en).

The Senior Researcher will conduct research as part of the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research environment. In addition to research activity, responsibilities will include teaching and thesis supervision, applying for external funding, and duties related to societal.  Responsibilities will also include teaching in the Faculty and Department joint courses, and, possibly, other tasks related to the Department and Faculty functions.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of Senior  Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The selected person is required to have a command of Finnish language. In certain cases, the University may grant exemption from this requirement. Good English skills and the ability to teach in English is considered an advantage.

The position requires a Doctoral degree in a suitable field and wide research experience after receiving the doctorate. Teaching experience, supervising academic theses, international research work and publications, working in a multidisciplinary research group and leading research projects will be considered an asset. Also beneficial for the applicant is the knowledge of the multidisciplinary and methologically diverse research tradition of the department. The research tradition consists of, for example, computer-based analysis of music, signal processing, motion research, brain research, experimental methods as well as the methods of qualitative research and theorisation. Also beneficial is the ability to grasp the new musical phenomena and their changing meanings in the changing world.

When assessing the applicant’s credits, his/her scientific work, research publications, teaching experience, pedagogic education, teaching materials and other credits regarding teaching and other studies will be taken into account. The assessment also considers demonstration lessons. Success in implementing research and teaching projects are viewed as a benefit.

The job-specific salary component of a Senior Researcher is based on the job demands level 5-7 (EUR 2 893,95 - 3 889,84/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46.3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
