Postdoctoral Researcher for modelling eco-evolutionary dynamics of aquatic food webs

Our naturally beautiful campus in the Jyväskylä city centre is home to a dynamic multidisciplinary research university – a modern, open and collaborative community of 2,500 experts and 15,000 students seeking answers to the pivotal questions of today and tomorrow. It was here, in 1863 that Finnish-language teacher education began. Since then, the University of Jyväskylä has been serving the future. The dialogue between research, education and society is our driving force. We cherish this balance of research and education, and work to promote open thinking. We kindle the skills, knowledge and passion to live wisely for the best of humanity.

Research of the Department of Biological and Environmental Science is renowned in the University’s denoted core research activity fields of basic natural phenomena and mathematical thinking.

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of

Postdoctoral Researcher for modelling eco-evolutionary dynamics of aquatic food webs, for a fixed 3-year term starting 1.12.2018 or as agreed.

The postdoctoral researcher will work in the research group of Associate Professor, Academy Research Fellow Anna Kuparinen within the Academy of Finland financed project "Anthropogenic and Environmental Effects on the Complex Eco-evolutionary Dynamics of Aquatic Ecosystems”. The tasks involve research concerning development of food web models for eco-evolutionary dynamics of aquatic ecosystems, associated teaching, and potential supervison of graduate and doctoral students.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher interested in developing modelling tools for complex aquatic food-web and ecosystem dynamics and applying them to research questions related to eco-evolutionary dynamics, harvesting/disturbances, and environmental variations experienced by aquatic species, communities, and ecosystems. The ideal candidate is expected to have, or be about to obtain, PhD in theoretical ecology/evolutionary biology, mathematics, statistics, or computational sciences (or any other relevant field as long as the skill set is suitable). The candidate is expected to have good programming skills using Matlab and preferable also R or equivalent programming skills, which facilitate rapid learning of new programming languages and environments.

The duties and qualification requirements and language skills for the position of the Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to have good skills in English language.

The job-specific salary component of a postdoctoral researcher is based on the job demands level 5-6 (2893,95 €/Month – 3374,18 €/Month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
