Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy is currently seeking to recruit an
Associate Professor (tenure track) or Professor, International Development Studies, starting August 1st 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed-term period of five years in the Associate Professor position or until further notice in the Professor position.
The subject of International Development Studies at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy organises the multidisciplinary, international Master’s Degree Programme in Development, Education and International Cooperationjointly with the Faculty of Education and Psychology. The programme broadens and deepens students’ understanding of the institutions, policies and actors of International Development from a critical, analytical and multidisciplinary perspective.
The candidate is expected to strengthen the research profile of the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy in the field of multidisciplinary International Development Studies, where the focus is on different development issues and related challenges. As a problem-based discipline, it aims at finding explanations for “development problems” and at investigating the significance of development. International Development Studies integrates the theories of various disciplines. Possible approaches include political economy, anthropology, sociology, and educational research.
The Associate Professor or Professor in International Development Studies will contribute with scientific activities to the development of research, teaching and doctoral training in the subject. Participation in the application of supplementary, external research funding is also part of the position. The focus is on active research work as well as on launching and implementing research projects. The Associate Professor or Professor is responsible for the Master’s Degree Programme in Development, Education and International Cooperation. The tasks include supervision of doctoral dissertations and master’s theses as well as teaching at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels.

The appointment for and Associate Professor is for a fixed period of five years, see tenure track path. An especially distinguished and unquestionably qualified person may exceptionally be appointed directly to the position of Professor presuming there is no candidate available who is more competent and suitable candidate for the position. The purpose of the fixed-term is, that the Associate Professor gathers enough merits for full Professor position. When an employee has been selected for a fixed-term associate professorship, an evaluation procedure is used regarding the employee’s merits for a professorship filled through an invitation procedure. The evaluation procedure shall begin before the end of the fixed-term contract. The evaluation procedure follows the same practices used in the expert evaluation procedure for filling a professorship.
The Associate Professor’s job-specific salary component is based on the job demands levels 7 (3 889,84 €/month) and the Professor’s job-specific salary component is based on the job demands levels 8-11 (4.702,72 – 6.928,70 €/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.
Six months trial period is applied to the filling of the Associate Professor position.
