Senior Researcher in research on Brain mechanisms

The Department of Psychology is currently seeking to recruit  staff to the position of
Senior Researcher in research on Brain mechanisms from 1 March, 2019 to 28 February, 2023 (4-year temporary position).

The Faculty of Education and Psychology comprises three departments – Education, Teacher Education and Psychology – and the Teacher Training School, which provides basic education and general upper secondary education. The faculty has 30 professorships. The number of staff is about 350, a hundred of whom work at the Teacher Training School.

Strategically selected areas of research strength in the faculty are the following: 1) Learning (e.g. learning disabilities, neurocognitive basis of learning, developing brain) 2) Interaction in learning, rearing, and therapy 3) Family and childhood, 4) Working life (e.g. learning and well-being at work, leadership), 5) Teaching, guidance and education. Internationally recognized areas of excellence and prominence include longitudinal research across the life span, experimental and intervention research, sophisticated methodological expertise, brain research, assessment of process-oriented learning, research on technology enhanced environments, and multidisciplinary approaches. Researchers of the faculty are sought-after research partners and the faculty provides high-quality education in its various disciplines (adult education, classroom and subject teacher education, early childhood education, guidance and career education, leadership, psychology, and special education).

Research infrastructure within the faculty includes centers/research networks ion the following areas: Interdisciplinary Brain Research (CIBR; EEG and MEG labs linked with the profiling action Brain changes across the life-span), Research on Learning and Teaching (CLT; linked with the MultiLeTe 1 & 2-profiling action), Research Forum of Learning Difficulties (ForLearning),  Methodology Centre for Human Sciences (IHME), Psychotherapy Training and Research, and Multidisciplinary Research on Children and Families. Department of Psychology offers state-of-the-art techniques for investigation of brain signal processing in humans (magnetoencephalography, electroencephalography) and animals (in-vivo electrophysiology). The department has hosted Centres of Excellence in Human Development and Its Risk Factors (1997–2005) and Learning and Motivation (2006–2011).

The faculty coordinates three profiling actions appointed by the Academy of Science: 1) Multidisciplinary Research on Learning and Teaching (MultiLeTe1, Profi1,2015-2019), 2) its extension MultiLeTe2, Profi4, 2018-2022, and 3) Brain changes across the life-span – the role of growth environments, self-regulation and physical activity (BRAIN, Profi3, 2017-2021). The field of research and focus of the current senior researcher position aligns with the profiling action BRAIN and its focus area 2 Mechanisms of environmental and endogenous effects on brain plasticity across the life span.  

The four focus areas of the BRAIN are the following:
(1)     Developmental changes in the brain across the life-span:  maturational changes in the brain during childhood and adolescence, and the ageing related changes.
(2)    Mechanisms of environmental and endogenous effects on brain plasticity across the life span:  external and internal factors affecting brain and behavioral plasticity at the cellular and neural systems level and specific mechanisms of action (e.g., models utilizing recording of electrophysiological activity from the brain structure or cell layer).
(3)     Self-regulation and development in the context across the life-span:  neural basis of self-regulation and the role of environment in forming the brain networks related to self-regulation.
(4)    Physical activity, functional capacity and brain changes across the lifespan: predictive power of physical activity on physical functioning and on brain measures underlying cognitive functions, health and emotional wellbeing.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of senior lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The selected person is required to have a command of Finnish language. In certain cases, the University may grant exemption from this requirement. A good command of English language and an ability to teach in English are regarded as advantageous for the applicant.

The applicant for position of Senior Researcher is  expected to have conducted internationally recognised high-quality research which aligns with focus 2 Mechanisms of environmental and endogenous effects on brain plasticity across the life span. The research profile of the applicant should support the research conducted in the profiling action, and s/he should have experience in acquiring contested research funding. In the selection process, we will also emphasize strategically appropriate international collaboration network and good cooperation skills.

The job-specific salary component of a Senior Researcher is based on the job demands level 5-7 (EUR 2 893,95 – 3 889,84/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46.3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.
