5-9 Postdoctoral Researchers in Mathematics and Statistics

Our naturally beautiful campus in the Jyväskylä city centre is home to a dynamic multidisciplinary research university – a modern, open and collaborative community of 2,500 experts and 15,000 students seeking answers to the pivotal questions of today and tomorrow. It was here, in 1863, that Finnish-language teacher education began. Since then, the University of Jyväskylä has been serving the future. The dialogue between research, education and society is our driving force. We cherish this balance of research and education, and work to promote open thinking. We kindle the skills, knowledge and passion to live wisely for the best of humanity.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking to recruit staff for the position of

4-7 Postdoctoral Researchers in Mathematics  and 1-2 Postdoctoral Researchers in Statistics beginning September 1, 2019 or as agreed, employment contract length maximum of four years.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Jyväskylä in central Finland is a world class research institution training mathematicians and statisticians for diverse jobs in industry, education, and academic research. The main research areas in the department are mathematical analysis and geometry, stochastics, inverse problems, and statistics with their applications. In mathematical analysis and geometry the research is focused on geometric analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, and geometry of metric groups. In stochastics the key research area is stochastic analysis. The research group in Inverse problems focuses its research on inverse problems in geometry and partial differential equations. These have applications e.g. in medical and industrial imaging. In statistics the areas of research are computational statistics, causal models, design, nonparametric and robust multivariate methods, biometry, and environmental statistics. The department is a member of two networks of the Finnish Centre of Excellences, one in Inverse Problems, another in Analysis and Dynamical Systems.

Strong preference will be given to candidates whose research interests overlap and/or complement the main research areas of the department. The postdoctoral researchers are expected to focus on scientific research, but also to participate in teaching within their own areas of expertise. The amount of teaching duties is rather small. Further details of the posts and research at the department are available at the departmental web pages.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English is required and a proficiency to teach in English will be considered beneficial.  A PhD degree is required.

The job-specific salary component of a postdoctoral researcher is based on the job demands level 5-6 (2903,61 EUR/month - 3386,00 EUR/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 6-50% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.

A trial period of six months will be used when the positions are first filled.
