Postdoctoral Researcher in Transdisciplinary Planetary Wellbeing Research

Under the umbrella of School of Resource Wisdom, we are currently seeking to recruit

three (3) Postdoctoral Researchers in Transdisciplinary Planetary Wellbeing Research starting 1.4.2019 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed term of three years each. 

School of Resource Wisdom, or JYU.WISDOM, is a transdisciplinary multi-faculty research community, the mission of which is to excel in the study of planetary wellbeing including resource wisdom, circular economy, conservation biology, and sustainability of the use of natural resources. JYU.WISDOM aspires to support, advance and advocate evidence based decision making with the ultimate goal of reducing the existential risk for humankind and for non-human nature.

Responsibilities of the post-docs are i) to conduct high quality transdisciplinary research related to one or several of the fields described below, ii) to support the transdisciplinary development of the School of Resource Wisdom, and iii) to actively participate in the Planetary Wellbeing - open engagement writing initiative, and to societal outreach together with the JYU.WISDOM community. We also expect some contributions to teaching, collaborative supervision of candidate and master theses, applying research funding, and minor administrative tasks in planning and running International Masters programmes in Corporate Environmental Management and/or Planetary Wellbeing.

Postdoctoral Researcher 1 will be appointed to the field of Corporate Environmental Management in Sustainable Business at the Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics. Research interests of the successful candidate will focus on organizational transition towards sustainability, sustainable strategies and business models, circular economy and bio-economy, responsible marketing and sustainable consumption, consumers’ pro-environmental behaviours or for example drivers of sustainable consumption and marketing in public policies. The successful candidate is motivated to expand his/her focus towards transdisciplinary research.  

Postdoctoral Researcher 2 will be appointed to the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Research interests of the successful candidate will focus on multidisciplinary food system studies, where the focus is on finding explanations and solutions for sustainability issues in food systems globally, nationally and locally. The successful candidate will integrate the theories and concepts of various disciplines including political science, social and public policy, sociology and philosophy, especially environmental justice and food ethics, and is motivated to further expand his/her focus towards transdisciplinary research.

Postdoctoral Researcher 3 will be appointed to the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Mathematics and Science. Research interests of the successful candidate will focus on questions related to sustainability of the use of natural resources, conservation biology, empirical assessment, measurement and long term monitoring of ecosystem condition and biodiversity, or for example multi-objective spatial planning and prioritization of land use. The successful candidate is motivated to expand his/her focus towards transdisciplinary research.

The chosen candidates shall hold a doctoral degree from a discipline supporting one or several of the descriptions of the research interests of the successful candidates, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work, and shall have demonstrated capability and motivation for an academic career through publications, research funding and other means. Evidence of professional engagement into societal discussion and/or decision making will be considered as an asset.

Other duties and qualification requirements for the position of the Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines.

The job-specific salary component of a postdoctoral researcher is based on the job demands level 5-6 (2903,61 €/month – 3386,00 €/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to 6-50 % of the job-specific salary component is also paid.

A trial period of six months will be used when filling the positions.
