Senior Researcher, chemistry

The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Senior Researcher (Chemistry) position in Kuopio. Role and salary  

The School of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Eastern Finland seeks to fill a senior researcher position at the interface between chemistry, biology, and medicine, starting from 1st of September or afterwards. We give high priority to the overall originality and promise of the candidate's work but expect them to be able to perform research and teach courses in Medicinal Chemistry, Synthesis, and Hit/Lead Optimization. We will start reviewing files and invite candidates starting from July 31st. 

The position is located in Kuopio, Finland. As a new member of the Drug Discovery and Delivery Research Community (DrugTech), you will be working in the School of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Health Sciences, and your main responsibilities will include:

  • planning and conducting medicinal chemistry studies and teaching courses
  • creating analysis scripts and analysing data, 
  • reporting and writing high-quality scientific publications

Other responsibilities include mentoring junior researchers, developing future funding proposals and taking part in ongoing projects.

As a senior researcher you will be working both independently and as a part the DrugTech Research Community. This multi-disciplinary research community brings together experts from many pharmaceutical disciplines, medicine, chemistry and physics. DrugTech groups investigate basic science and technologies that are relevant in drug discovery and delivery. These investigations facilitate the development of new candidate drugs and delivery systems, and emphasise drug development for ocular, CNS and cardiovascular indications. Drug development depends on the expertise of various disciplines that are needed in the synthesis of materials, analytics, formulation and biological testing. Therefore, inter-disciplinary synergy is an important asset both in the research work and in the education of young drug developers in a multidisciplinary environment. The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project from 1 September 2021 (or as agreed) until 31 July 2026. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff. 

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of the Finnish universities. This salary comprises of two components: a job requirement component and a personal performance component. In this position, the job requirement component is approx. 3499 - 4034 euros/month, based on level 6-7 of the chart for teaching and research staff. The personal performance component can be a minimum of 6 % and a maximum of 50 % of the above-mentioned sum. 

Our requirements and expectations

  • a doctoral degree in relevant disciplines
  • at least 2-3 year post-doc experience in medical chemistry, especially in hit/lead optimization
  • a strong research record 
  • excellent writing and communication skills. English (and Finnish-if applicable), are used as languages of instruction and supervision in this position
  • an independent approach to doing research
