The Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies is inviting applications for 8 Postdoctoral Researcher positions

At the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies, interdisciplinarity serves as a foundation for our activities. We examine and study the society and environment around us, as well as the relationships between them, from a multitude of scientific perspectives. We are home to an exceptionally broad selection of disciplines, including the humanities, business studies, natural sciences, law, health sciences, and social sciences. This allows us to seek diverse solutions to local, regional and even global issues, and we build a sustainable future while taking economic and environmental aspects into consideration. The faculty has approximately 4,400 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students and some 480 postgraduate students. The faculty has 325 staff members. Research carried out by the university’s strategically significant Research Communities (RCs) is international and of a high scientific standard, generating interdisciplinary research knowledge and solutions to global challenges. Their research also lays a foundation for the university’s Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral level education.
Research conducted at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies is linked to eight multidisciplinary Research Communities, namely:
The applicant’s research must be linked to research carried out at the faculty in one of the above-mentioned research areas. The most scientifically qualified and best suited persons will be appointed to these positions. The primary duty of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be to conduct research in accordance with their research proposal as part of the relevant Research Community. The Postdoctoral Researcher is responsible for, and is expected to participate in, the planning and implementation of research projects within the Research Community, and they are expected to be active and successful in publishing articles in international scientific journals. In addition, the Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to participate in the supervision of academic theses, and to give teaching in their special field.
The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to have a suitable doctoral degree (UEF University Regulations, Section 31). The doctoral degree may have been completed a maximum of 5 years prior to the start of the position on 1 January 2021 (i.e. the degree certificate must be dated between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2020). An applicant with a doctoral degree completed more than 5 years ago can be considered for a specific reason only (maternity, paternity, parental or childcare leave, military or non-military service). If the applicant pleads to the above-mentioned reasons, they need to explain these in the application.
Mobility after the completion of the doctoral degree is expected of the applicant (working in some other research environment than the one in which the doctoral degree was completed), or the applicant is expected to present a concrete plan of mobility for the Postdoctoral Researcher period. A research environment refers to a local research community or research group in which the researcher works. The mobility requirement is automatically met by applicants who plan to move to a new research environment by applying for this Postdoctoral Researcher position at the University of Eastern Finland. In the application (research proposal), the applicant is expected to describe their previous mobility, or present a mobility plan. The applicant is expected to have demonstrated achievements in high-level scientific research and in publishing in international journals. Experience in international research cooperation and international researcher mobility will be regarded as merits. The applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their research proposal, scientific qualification and eligibility. The Postdoctoral Researcher positions will be filled for a 3-year term beginning on 1 January 2021 (or as agreed). Work to be started no later than on 1 June 2021. Postdoctoral Researcher positions are always filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).
The salary of the Postdoctoral Researcher position is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart of the teaching and research staff in the salary system for Finnish universities (2,967.84 euros/month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary is supplemented by a personal performance component, which can be a maximum of 50% of the job requirement component.

The applicant must also clearly indicate the Research Community their research is linked to, as well as the name of a contact person/supervisor in the RC concerned.
