20 part-time (50%) early stage researcher positions

The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We offer education in nearly one hundred major subjects and are home to approximately 15,500 students and 2,700 members of staff. Our campuses are located in Joensuu and Kuopio. In international rankings, we are ranked among the leading universities in the world.

Our new shared doctoral student position system is designed to develop our doctoral education in a manner that makes the expertise of our newly graduated doctors extensively available to business and industry, as well as to society at large.

We are now inviting applications to 20 part-time (50%) early stage researcher positions at the University of Eastern Finland, to be filled within our new shared doctoral student position system

The main duty of early stage researchers (doctoral students) working in the doctoral programmes of the University of Eastern Finland is to complete their doctoral research in accordance with their approved research proposal. Early stage researchers selected to the shared doctoral student position system will be working full-time: they will have a parallel 50% contract of employment with the University of Eastern Finland and with another employer.

The early stage researcher positions available in the shared doctoral student position system will be filled for a minimum of a one-year and a maximum of a four-year term starting on 1 January 2021, or as agreed; however, no later than 1 June 2021.

These early stage researcher positions are available in all doctoral programmes of the university:

For further information on the doctoral programmes and on the supervision of research, please see the page of doctoral school https://www.uef.fi/doctoral-school.

A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).

The early stage researcher positions may be applied for by persons already enrolled as postgraduate students at the University of Eastern Finland and by persons planning to complete their doctoral degree at the University of Eastern Finland. Students who are finishing their Master’s degree may also apply for the positions, provided that their degree is completed by 31 October 2020. In this group, the possible offer of a position will be conditional and tied to the completion of the degree by the above-mentioned deadline.

Early stage researcher positions may be offered to applicants who are qualified to pursue postgraduate studies and who have a permanent contract of employment with another employer, or a fixed-term contract of employment whose duration is at least as long as the duration of the early stage researcher position at the University of Eastern Finland. If an applicant is selected to an early stage researcher position at the University of Eastern Finland, the applicant's contract of employment with another employer must start/continue as a parallel, 50% part-time contact, and with doctoral research as the main duty.

Being appointed as an early stage researcher requires a commitment by the applicant's employer to a parallel contract of employment, and this commitment must be submitted as an attachment to the application (see attachments to the electronic application). Before the applicant's contract of employment at the University of Eastern Finland begins, the terms and conditions of the employment, including immaterial property rights and the publicity of research findings, will be agreed upon with the applicant’s employer on the contract template (see the instructions to this call for applications).

Persons who are planning or completing their first doctoral degree can be appointed to these early stage researcher positions. When filling the positions, the scientific level and innovativeness of the applicant’s research proposal, the relevance of the research topic to the disciplines and themes of the doctoral programme in question, as well as the applicant’s consideration of ethical aspects relating to his or her research will be taken into account. Consideration will also be given to language skills required in postgraduate studies, earlier academic performance, progression of the doctoral research during a possible earlier funding period, duration of possible earlier funding secured for the doctoral research and an estimate of the applicant's possibilities to complete the proposed research and the postgraduate studies.

When selecting early stage researchers to the shared doctoral student position system, the applicability of the expertise associated with the doctoral research by business and industry, and by and society at large, will also be taken into consideration, in addition to the above-mentioned factors. The applicant’s earlier qualifications and experience in working for companies and/or communities will also be taken into consideration.

The applicant/appointee is required to meet the student admission criteria and qualification requirements of the doctoral programme concerned. For applicants who do not yet have a postgraduate study right at the University of Eastern Finland, the offer of a position will be conditional until they have been granted a postgraduate study right at the University of Eastern Finland. The contents and requirements of the doctoral studies will be the same for the applicants selected to the shared doctoral student position system as for everyone enrolled in the doctoral programmes.
